Background: In 1916 over 3,000 suffragists converged on Saint Louis, Missouri, in the sweltering heat during the Democratic convention that was poised to re-nominate Woodrow Wilson as President. Their sole demand was a plank in the party platform in support of women’s suffrage. Wearing white dresses and golden sashes that said “Votes For Women,” they lined the street where the delegates would walk from their hotel to the convention center. The impact of these women, who formed a walk-less, talk-less parade – sometimes called The Golden Lane – was enormous. They accomplished their objective and got the plank on the platform.
The event is being organized by the League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis, the St. Louis Public Library (St. Louis’ original search engine), Rebecca Now & Then, and the Missouri History Museum. Sponsors include Webster University and AAUW (empowering women since 1881). You can be a sponsor. Contact the League’s office for sponsorship levels at (314) 961-6869 or email league@LWVstl.org. Your contribution is tax deductible.

Program Themes and Purpose:
Because 2016 is a national election year, the St. Louis Branch is choosing to focus its Feb 2016 event on informing members and interested guests on key legislation that is currently under debate at the national, state, and local levels.
We hope this program will get people engaged and inspired to actively work in these legislative areas. At the end of the program, we will ask people to sign up for follow-up interest groups for each of these areas. The StL AAUW Branch will coordinate ongoing needed action in these areas up through the date of the national election in November 2016.
