#MeToo and What’s Next?
Three Perspectives on Sexual Harassment and Due Process for Women in the Workplace

12:00 N, Wednesday, May 30, 2018
at the Missouri Athletic Club-West, 1777 Des Peres Rd, St. Louis MO 63117

Critics of the #MeToo movement have declared that due process has been left behind in sexual harassment claims that “rush to judgment” in the court of public opinion.  But what really is due process regarding sexual harassment complaints?  Is it legally defined and mandated? How is this applied in the workplace?

Come hear three different perspectives:  the senior human resources manager who needs to respond to the employee and think of the overall company need; an attorney who advises and represents the individual client; and an EEOC investigator who applies federal laws.  Hearing the different perspectives will provide important insights into this timely topic.

  •  Moderator:  Jo Mannies, reporter at St. Louis Public Radio
  •  EEOC:  Leatha Johnson, supervisory investigator, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
  • Attorney:  Donna Harper, attorney at Sedey Harper Westhoff
  • HR:  Mildred Galvin, senior vice president and senior partner involved with Talent Development, Fleishman-Hillard

Lunch buffet:  $20 for Press Club members and $23 for non-members/guests.
Click Here for Reservation or contact by email at stlpressclub@gmail.com
or by phone at 314-449- 8029 or 314-680- 9664.

Co-sponsored by:  AAUW St. Louis Branch, Coalition of Labor Union Women,
and Women’s Foundation of Greater St. Louis

Branch Booth at the 2018 St. Louis Earth Day Festival

AAUW members will be “womaning” a booth at the Festival in Forest Park (the lower Muny area), handing out brochures and research material and talking to interested visitors about AAUW.  The booth theme is equity in pay (Work Smart), equity in the workplace (sexual harassment), and equity in all areas.

SPRING FLING

We are very fortunate that Sally has arranged for Miss  Jubilee to be the entertainment after lunch.  Miss Jubilee has been entertaining audiences in St. Louis and beyond since 2007.  Led by powerhouse vocalist Valerie Kirchhoff, Miss Jubilee plays an energetic blend of Hot Jazz, Hokum, and Low-Down Blues from the 1920s and 30s. Their one-of-kind repertoire draws heavily from the bluesy and swingin’ sounds of St. Louis and Chicago’s south side. Fueled by a hard driving rhythm section and gutbucket horns, Miss Jubilee is a favorite for fans of all ages.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4IvGygREQY

Tuesday, March 13, 2018, 6:30 p.m.

Pasta House on Delmar.  RSVP to Ellen for Reservations.

We will be discussing a tabling at the St Louis Earth Day Festival* to increase visibility for AAUW and its work; Work Smart updates; IBC update (Spring Fling, Title IX project); a panel discussion with the Press Club of St. Louis; state conference update (see article on page 6);  other topics of interest and announcements.   Contact Ellen at ironnew@msn.com or her phone number in your directory.

*St. Louis Earth Day has built its reputation on its annual Festival, which is now recognized as one of the largest Earth Day celebrations in the country but touches over a million individuals through its year-round programming like Recycling On the Go, Green Dining Alliance, and Earth Day Action Grants.  The festival will take place on April 21-22, Forest Park on the Muny grounds, 11 am to 5 pm daily.

Because Saturday, April 21st, is the same date as Spring Fling, it is requested that anyone not attending Spring Fling please volunteer to work shifts at the festival on the 21st.  Of course, all members are asked to sign up with Sally McGowan  (sopawsam@sbcglobal.net) for shifts (two hours or as long as you can) for either (or both) days.

The St. Louis AAUW Branch is a member of the Missouri Women’s Network.  The MO Women’s Network has three main events every year:

  • The first is the Equality Day Brunch where we celebrate the Anniversary of Women Winning the Vote. This year the Brunch will be on August 25, 2018.
  • The second is the Legislative Retreat where every women’s organization in the state gathers to set their legislative priorities. This year the date is January 13, 2018.
  • The third event is Equity Action Day when we storm Jefferson City with our collaborating groups to let our legislators know what we care about.  That lobbying day will be on April 10, 2018.
