JANUARY 21, 2017 – THE WOMEN’S MARCH ON ST. LOUIS
Mirroring the march on Washington, D.C., St. Louis, like cities and towns all over the country and the world, held a march in St. Louis. It began at Union Station (see first picture), moving east on Market Street all the way to Luther Ely Smith Square between the Arch and the Old Courthouse where a rally was held. After the rally, an action fair was held at the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA where organizations tabled their information. AAUW was a sponsor, along with the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri, Girls in the Know, Interfaith Partnership of Greater St. Louis, National Council of Jewish Women, PROMO, Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the League of Women Voters, National Women’s Political Caucus, Missouri Women Veterans, Lydia’s House, Witnessing Whitenss, Organization for Black Struggle, and many, many more (see http://womensmarchonstlouis.weebly.com/after-the-march.html).
One of our members, Sally, made the following comment:
January 21, 2017, was a beautiful and historic day for the Women’s March in St. Louis. I wanted to show my support for women and girls. The march was slightly delayed due to the huge number of people; the police had to close the street. They thanked us, I guess for such a peaceful march. Maybe they thanked us for standing up for the women in their lives. Walking down Market Street, you could just feel the energy! There were lots of creative signs. One of my favorites was “A Woman’s Place is in the HOUSE and SENATE.” I met so many women from Illinois and Missouri. There were lots of inquiries about AAUW from our sign. I met a young lady whose late mother belonged to AAUW in Alton, Illinois, years ago. She was so happy to see us, like we were family. We talked a bit and shared our signs. I believe that she and her friends possibly will be new Alton (IL) Branch recruits!
I am reminded every day that I am in a man’s world. The issues of equal rights, pay equity, and seeing more women leaders are just some issues of importance to me. We need to support each other and work together to break that glass ceiling, especially now.
To continue the momentum, we need outreach campaigns (a march follow-up), more lobbying, recruitment of women to contact our legislature, voting, and preparing more women to get involved in the political process to become leaders. The Two-Minute Activist on the national AAUW web site is a great tool, as well as using the old snail mail, to get our voices heard. Sometimes when I email my representatives I get the same reply, like they never even read the letter. We need to get their attention! Continue the momentum! Keep up the good work!

Title IX
A current branch project involves Title IX, which is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. (See https://www.justice.gov/crt/overview-title-ix-education-amendments-1972-20-usc-1681-et-seq for details).
The theme of this year’s April Sexual Assault Awareness month is “Engage New Voices.” A guide is being designed by branch members to get people to ask questions, not to provide answers per se. The language of the law’s requirements suggests possible ideas for solutions. We want to provide an exploratory tool, not specific “answers.” This guide will be for colleges and universities to use. (K-12 schools also have Title IX coordinators, but the laws being discussed in the survey are applicable to college-level campuses.)

A coalition of women’s groups, including AAUW St. Louis, is developing a list of questions to present to St. Louis City mayoral candidates regarding key issues prior to the March 2017 election. They will publish the replies publicly.
